History of Bathtubs

Early plumbing systems date back to bathtubs around 3300 BC with the discovery of. Evidence of the first personal sized bath tub was found on the Isle of Crete where a 5 foot long pedestal tub was found built from hardened pottery. This tub is the most likely forefather of the classic 19th century claw foot tubs.

The Roman Empire are known as the early champions of bathing. Around 500 BC Roman citizens were encouraged to bathe daily in one of the many public baths. Private bathing rooms were far more ornate and typically would resemble shallow swimming pools that encompassed the entire room. The Romans used marble for the tubs, lead and bronze for pipes, and created a complex sewage system for sanitation purposes.

The Roman empire set the early bar for personal hygiene as we know it today.Contrary to popular belief, bathing and sanitation were not a lost practice with the collapse of the Roman Empire. As a matter of fact, soapmaking first became an established trade during the Early Middle Ages. Also, contrary to myth, chamberpots were not disposed of out the window and into streets in the Middle Ages -- this was instead a Roman practice. Bathing in fact did not fall out of fashion until shortly after the Renaissance, replaced instead with the heavy use of sweat-bathing and perfume, as it was thought that water could carry disease into the body through the skin.

Modern sanitation as we know it was not widely adapted until the 19th and 20th centuries.The bath tubs's modern spouse, the toilet, had problems gaining acceptance. Sir John Harrington invented the first flushing toilets for himself and for his godmother, Queen Elizabeth I. When Harrington published a book describing his invention, he was roundly chided by peers, embarrassing him to the point of retirement from plumbing.

His two toilets were the only ones he ever produced. The next water closet would not be seen for 200 years when it was introduced by Alexander Cummings in 1775. This event would mark the very beginnings of the modern bathroom.It was now time for the piping to catch up with the fixtures. Until the 19th century, most water pipes in the US were made from hollow trees.

 In the early 1800s, cast-iron production began reducing American reliance on England for this material. Finally, in 1848, The National Public Health Act was passed in the US, creating a plumbing code for the first time.In 1883, Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company and Kohler Company began producing cast-iron bathtubs. Far from the ornate feet and luxury most associated with clawfoot tubs, an early Kohler example was advertised as a "horse trough/hog scalder, when furnished with four legs will serve as a bathtub." It is almost humorous to note that the item's use as hog scalder was considered a more important marketing point than its ability to function as a bathtub. Everyone knew what a hog scalder or horse trough was, but many people at that time had never bathed in a tub. In truth, these tubs caught on because of the sanitary and easy-to-clean surfaces that prevent the spread of disease then from any purchaser's desire to smell nice for his neighbors.A few years later, Thomas Twyford created the first valveless toilet constructed from china. Before this time, toilets were normally made from metal and wood.
Thomas Crapper would gain infamy as the inventor of the modern toilet when he bought the rights to a patent for a "Silent Valveless Water Waste Preventer", but he did not invent the toilet.The bathing world was rocked by controversy when a completely inaccurate account of bathing and bathtub history was published by H.L. Mencken in 1917. What began as a light attempt at humor ended up being adopted as the truth by the public and even reputable publications. While perhaps good reading, Mencken's account of laws prohibiting bathing, and much more, is not true.The end of World War I resulted in a housing construction boom in the United States and a new conception of the purpose-built modern bathroom.

Bathrooms prior to World War I were typically a converted bedrooms or spare rooms, not rooms built originally to contain bathroom fixtures. Complete with toilet, sink, and tub, the modern bathroom was a feature of 100% of new homes by the end of the 20th century, whereas only 1% of homes had had bathrooms in 1921.In the latter half of the 20th century, the once popular clawfoot tub morphed into a built-in tub with a small apron front. This enclosed style afforded easier maintenance and, with the emergence of colored sanitary ware, more design options for the homeowner. The Crane Company introduced colored bathroom fixtures to the US market in 1928, and slowly this influx of design options and easier cleaning and care led to the near demise of clawfoot style bathtubs.

Corian worktops - Are Solid Surfaces A Good Choice For My Kitchen Worktop

There are a number of similar surfaces that in truth are little different in their make up and properties to Corian but as the pioneer of Solid Surfaces, Corian is the standard bearer and that does count for a lot in the eyes of the consumer..

This isn't to say that other surfaces aren't as good as Corian and to determine this there's no better proof than the opinions of fabricators who work regularly on Solid Surface Materials. LG Hi-Macs like Corian, is an acrylic surface that offers a 15 year manufacturers warranty and in a consensus of opinions I've read  on fabricators discussion forums over the years, there is nothing to choose between the two.

As with Corian, LG Hi-Macs worktops  are available in a wide variety of colours and, like Corian Worktops, LG Hi-Macs surface warranties are only available through a network of quality installers and  fabricators giving the client a greater assurance of a quality project being undertaken and some peace of mind thereafter.

To examine warranties for all surfaces is an important factor and one that is often confusing to the consumer. The warranties available are limited and apply only to faults that can be determined as being a manufacturing defect or as a result of a substandard installations only when  carried out by approved quality fabricators and installers.
As for choice, it's worth mentioning that a number of relatively new "Solid Surfaces" are of thin core and cannot be compared to the 13mm guage of Corian and Hi-Macs. Personally, I have resisted any attempts to sell these surfaces after having witnessed a number of issues with cracking and delaminating, so again, if you do consider thin core surfaces, check the warranty and ensure it offers you sufficient cover for the price you are paying. Interestingly enough a price exercise I once carried out saw Corian coming in more affordable than a thin core surface less than a quarter of its thickness.

In the kitchen Corian worktops and Hi-Macs Worktops offer their owners seamless joints and seamless sinks with endless design possibilities seeing more distinctive projects being offered by creative designers. Downturn end panels are becoming increasingly popular as are deeper profiles such as 60mm or 100mm finishes.

So there you have it, there are a number of Solid surface worktops in the UK yet it's important to determine the differences before making your decision.

They remain a firm favourite for UK Kitchen Buyers but my advice is to undertake some thorough research on your choices before making a decision on what's best for your kitchen or bathroom project.

Look Beyond Stainless as the Best Material for your Kitchen Sink

Think that choosing the best material for your kitchen sink means choosing between stainless and porcelain, or enamel over cast-iron? You may not have shopped for sinks lately. Although stainless sinks dominate TV home renovation shows, the reality is that homeowners have a vast array of choices before them.
In assessing the best materials for your home, there are several things you need to concern yourself with, such as quality, price, durability, and ease of cleaning.
Most materials come in several grades. While you don't always need top-of-the-line materials, you should make sure that the quality you are buying will stand up to your demands. Installing a new sink can be time-consuming and costly, so choosing the best product you can afford you a wise use of your time and money.

Whether you buy your sink from a designer, contractor, or big-box store, make sure to look at the specs. Many products indicate the temperature they can withstand and list some of the other qualities they have. Buying a new sink adds a lot your kitchen, so consider the pros and cons of each product when choosing the best material for your kitchen sink.

Crock Pots- Do You Put Your Crock Pot on Your Countertop Surface

Just so Surface you know, I'm not sharing this information about crock pots so that I can knock myself or any other counter top repair specialists out of work, I just want to share things that you should already know, but probably do not know.

It's not unusual for me to be told that a homeowner thought that they could put a crock pot or any other hot thing on their solid surface countertop. I know that when I was just getting into the countertop business back in 1993, there were some salespeople that actually thought that was true. Since they thought that it was true they passed that information along to consumers. Needless to say, that came back to bite a lot of kitchen and bath people in the backside.

It also exposed the fact that while solid surface countertops are high quality, durable, and can enhance any area that they are used in, they are not now nor have they ever been indestructable. They are not now and have never been advertised as such by any of the actual manufacturers. Dupont is the pioneer of solid surface with Corian®, and I can promise you that even though the myth of indestructableness is widespread, Dupont never put it out there. In fact they have always tried very hard to be sure it was marketed properly.
I was checking stats and seeing what links people used to find my blog and website. I found this forum that is sure to drum up some work for us solid surface repair specialists. This thread is titled "Crock Pot Use" and it is located
Things like this forum and other do it yourself type message boards give out bad information about what these countertops can and cannot take. Another thing that goes around is that you can't use crock pots on solid surface but that you can use them on stone countertops. Not true. Even stone countertops can and do crack from using Crock pots directly on them. I've even heard people say, "I have used my Crock Pot on all my countertops with no problem." To them I say, "You have been very lucky." Some people have cracked their countertop with the first use of a Crock pot directly on the countertop.

I Surface really wanted to get on that forum and join the discussion but not enough to pay the $5.00 fee to join. Anyway, maybe I will get lucky and all the people that are taking the advice that this forum is dishing out will be North Carolina residents and then I can fix their countertops for them.

Corian worktops - Are Solid Surfaces A Good Choice For My Kitchen Worktop

When it comes to making your choice for a surface in the kitchen Solid Surface worktops may be something you are considering.
There are a number of similar surfaces that in truth are little different in their make up and properties to Corian but as the pioneer of Solid Surfaces, Corian is the standard bearer and that does count for a lot in the eyes of the consumer..

Failure to follow procedures recommended in the Fabrication Guide Book for transportation, storage, handling, fabrication, or maintenance;
Physical abuse, accidents or misuse;
Exposure to excessive heat;
Faulty or improper installation, including seams.
For all Solid Surfaces it's important to consider the potential damage that could occur outside of the warranty conditions and to incorporate your new surfaces into an existing household insurance policy is good advice.

As for choice, it's worth mentioning that a number of relatively new "Solid Surfaces" are of thin core and cannot be compared to the 13mm guage of Corian and Hi-Macs. Lake Erie's Central Basin

Lake Erie's Central Basin The Lake Erie's Central Basin is located from about Huron, Ohio, to Erie, Pennsylvania. The Central Basin is wide open water with no Islands and the average water depth is more than 70 feet, Always think safety in these waters, or anywhere on Lake Erie, because boating conditions may change rapidly. Be sure to follow safe boating tips any time you are on the water and observe good clearance away from fishing boats, freighters and commercial tugs.

Fishing for Seelhead Trout, Smallmouth Bass, Walleyes, Yellow Perch is popular among many boaters. Fishing is best in the dead of summer in Lake Erie's central basin because as the water warms up in the Western basin many fish species migrate to the central basin and cooler waters. The central basin is particularly noted for it's Steelhead fishing. Steelhead typically need deeper water and the ave. depth in the central basin is 70ft, perfect habitat for Steel Head. I would like to mention you need to be aware of the central basin's deed water zone. Here's what the OHIO dnr has to say about it:

Copied from the OHIO DNR website 7/15/2008 In response to the many questions from anglers, media and those concerned about Lake Erie resources, we present the following fact sheet regarding the central basin "dead zone." What is the central basin "Dead Zone?" The central basin "dead zone" is a layer of cold water at the bottom of the central basin that has little or no dissolved oxygen in it. The central basin is located from about Huron, Ohio, to Erie, Pennsylvania. As waters warm in the central basin, they form three specific layers. The warm surface and upper layer is called the epilimnion, it is characterized by with warm water with good oxygen and plant and animal life. The second layer is called the thermocline, and it is a small layer of rapid temperature change and loss of some oxygen. The bottom layer is known as the hypolimnion; it is cold, has low to moderate oxygen, no sunlight or algae activity, and decomposition by bacteria occurs here. These conditions can occur in most offshore waters deeper than 15-18 meters (49-60 feet) to the bottom of the lake. Hot weather, precipitation and wave action all dictate the onset and length of this condition. It can vary in depth and the amount of oxygen in the hypolimnion across the lake, north and south, east and west as a variable, patchy matrix. These conditions occur every summer from mid to late July through early September. After September this zone breaks down, when the lake becomes all one temperature again, in an event called a turnover. You can also get more information
